$5000.00 Grant Awarded by The Educational Partnership Foundation to Support over 4000 Rocky View School Students to Read Close to 10 Million Minutes
TheNewswire / December 22, 2016 - Rocky View Schools has been awarded $5000 by The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF). The Citizenship in Action Grant was awarded to Rocky View in support of the Calgary Flames’ “Reading… Give It A Shot” program that will potentially reach over 4,000 students within fifteen elementary, middle and multi-level schools across Rocky View and will support our jurisdictional goal, “Learners are literate and numerate” in the Division’s four year plan in a fun and exciting way.
‘Reading.... Give It A Shot’ encourages elementary students to read everything and anything whether it is a book, newspaper, magazine or content on the internet. All students, regardless of their reading level, can participate by counting minutes. Participating students are rewarded with a Calgary Flames player bookmark for every 100 minutes read. Over the course of the term, students work to collect the entire team of player bookmarks, 24 in total; therefore, reading 2400 minutes! With 4,027 students, Rocky View will read 9,664,800 minutes. By promoting the joy of reading, ‘Reading… Give It A Shot’ not only opens a world of knowledge, creativity and imagination to Rocky View students but also builds reading skill and stamina in our readers. This complements and aligns with the RVS Literacy initiative and other community partnerships. “Rocky View Schools have been great supporters of TEPF and we are extremely pleased to be able to partner with them on this great initiative” explains Din Ladak, President & CEO of TEPF.
On Thursday December 22 at 12:00pm, Din Ladak and Kevin Strybosch from TEPF will be presenting Rocky View Literacy Specialists Jody Moore, Susan Rudakoff and Julie Vaillancourt with the grant. RVS’ Associate Superintendent of Learning, Dave Morris and Pam Davidson, Director of 21st Century Learning, will be on hand to accept the generous contribution towards promoting reading and learning in our schools.
